KCCHSD is located in Kit Carson County in east central Colorado. This family friendly rural community is home to approximately 7,163 residents. (2018 Census.gov) Burlington, Bethune, Stratton, Vona, Seibert and Flagler make Kit Carson County a leading producer of corn, wheat and livestock. Kit Carson County is full of wide open vistas and beautiful scenery.
Sometimes referred to as "Frontier" as a way to describe the extreme rural populations across the state due to the population density being below 6 people living per square mile. Kit Carson County specifically has an average of 3.8 people living per square mile therefore putting us in an extreme rural or "frontier" population. Many times, this "frontier" designation is a good descriptor of life being slightly more difficult when compared to life in a metropolitan or urban area. Especially if families are food challenged to begin with. The economy is very agricultural-based in this part of the state. Crime is lower here, however, the cost of living is slightly higher too. Kit Carson County is a wonderful place to raise children based on the close-knit communities' residents. Various families have homesteaded here and encourage their children to return to the area to raise their children after they get their college degree.
