How does Tubal Ligation work?
Tubal ligation stops an egg from traveling from the ovaries through the fallopian tubes and blocks sperm from traveling up the fallopian tubes to the egg. The procedure doesn’t affect your hormones and menstrual cycle.
What is the Tubal Ligation Procedure like?
The actual surgery takes about 30 minutes. During the procedure, you will be given anesthesia so you won’t feel anything. With a couple of small incisions, Dr. Dabelea closes off your fallopian tubes using heat, clips, or rings to seal your tubes shut, or remove your tubes altogether.
When is a good time to get Tubal Ligation?
Most tubal ligation procedures cannot be reversed so it is best to get a Tubal Ligation when you are positive you won’t want any children or any more children. The procedure can be done at any time as an outpatient procedure, during a C-section or following a vaginal birth.
How long is recovery time after a Tubal Ligation?
Patients typically return home a few hours after surgery. Recovery depends on your general health and how your body reacts, however, you can usually recover within a couple of days. It is recommended to avoid lifting anything heavier than 12 pounds for a week after the surgery. Tubal Ligation prevents pregnancy right away, but wait until you feel healed and ready to resume sex.
